Our ranking of the 5 best beaches in Portugal!

Portugal has some of the most beautiful beaches in Europe, immense and wild. The beaches of the coast of Portugal are usually beaten by the wind, which makes it pleasant to stop even in the hottest months.

The tides change the conformation, huge beaches at high tide can disappear completely leaving the place to the Ocean that clashes mercilessly with rocks and cliffs. It is no coincidence that Portugal is one of the best places in Europe for surfing and body boarding.

1 – Alentejo BeachesThe 5 best beaches in Portugal! (2021)

Comporta beach is one of the most beautiful and wild in the Alentejo, an underrated and little visited region where the beaches are incredibly wild and lonely.

Porto Covo is one of the first centers (reachable by car from Lisbon) that you will find on the Alentejo coast. The village is very pretty, white and blue. The two beaches in front of Porto Covo are very beautiful, but less wild than those you will find continuing south.

The beaches of Malhão and Aivados are located in the stretch of coast from Porto Covo to Vilanova Milfontes. They are huge beaches that change constantly with the wind and the tides and are part of the natural park of Southeast Alentejano and Costa Vicentina, the stretch of coastline that goes from Porto Covo to Cape San Vincente and that can be traveled on foot using marked trails (here you will find all the info to walk the incredible Rota Vicentina).

2 – Algarve Beaches The 5 best beaches in Portugal! (2021)

With Praia da Amoreira begins the coast of Algarve, more touristic than that of Alentejo and frequented by tourists and surfers from all over the world. The beach of Carreagem is one of the most known and yet so big and wild that it seems almost empty even in August. In Arrifana the beach is smaller and equipped with services (kiosk and bar, not far away), which is rare on the Portuguese coast.

Monte Clerigo, like Arrifana, is easily accessible from the village road, unlike many beaches in Portugal, which are completely immersed in nature.

3 – Porto Beaches The 5 best beaches in Portugal! (2021)

It is the mouth of the river Duoro to divide in two the coast around Porto. To the north of the city you can set out to discover the Costa de Verde while moving south you can discover the beautiful beaches of the Costa da Prata.
