The Sachertorte was invented in 1832 by pastry chef Franz Sachers, who became known for his incredible dessert when he prepared it to celebrate the birthday of Prince Klemens von Metternich.
The Prince, an heir to a wealthy family of hoteliers of Jewish origin, enjoyed trying new dishes and ordered the chef to create a cake. The head pastry chef was ill, and no one in the kitchen knew what they should be preparing for their royal guest- until a 16-year old young apprentice cook named Franz Sacher rolled up his sleeves! He created this famous chocolate torte using whatever ingredients he could find at hand–and now Sachertorte cakes are available on every continent thanks to him.
