What You Need to Know Before Floating on the Dead Sea

No bucket list will ever be complete if it doesn’t include floating in the Dead Sea. Your trip to Jordan or Israel should definitely include making a stop at the Earth’s lowest point.

But floating on the Dead Sea is nothing anywhere near floating on a regular beach. So, before you decide to take the plunge, here are some important things you need to know before getting into the super-salty waters of the Dead Sea. 

Keep the Water Off Your Face 

This first tip is very important because the water at the Dead Sea is extremely salty. In fact, even the smallest splash of water in your eyes can be very horrible. Rubbing your eyes is also a big no-no as it only just makes things worse. 

The sting may last for several minutes but if you like to remove it right away, be sure to step out of the water and then use clean water to rinse it off. It is also not recommended to get water in your mouth. The taste is one of the worse you have ever tasted in your life, not to mention that it will make your mouth very dry.

Don’t Shave Before You Get into the Water

Since the Dead Sea’s water is extra salty, even the smallest scrapes or cuts will sting once you step inside the water. It is best to shave two days before your trip to the Dead Sea to give the cuts some time to heal.

Put on Your Swimming Shoes 

Once you walk into the water, one of the first things you will notice is that rocks are everywhere. You might get cuts on your feet and legs if you aren’t too careful. There are also salt chunks even on the sand, making it really painful to walk barefoot. Flip flops will never be enough here so don’t forget to wear swimming shoes to cover your feet properly. 

Not Knowing How to Swim is Fine 

Swimming is just impossible in the Dead Sea. While it is easy to freak out to go into the water knowing that you are not a good swimmer, there is no need to worry at all. You just need to learn how to float, and you will be good to go.

To get started, take some small steps in the water, and sit down on the ground, completely submerging your lower half in the water. Let your body go up first while using your hands to hold on to the ground. Once you become more comfortable, push yourself with your arms deeper into the water until you can no longer reach the ground. Lean back your head and you will soon be floating in the water freely.

Of course, it is not every day that you get to float on the Dead Sea itself. So, instead of worrying or panicking, take your time to breathe in everything around you. The place is super quiet and calm that you will soon be lost in serenity as you float on the Dead Sea!
