A Long History

Guam’s interesting history is one of the top reasons why you might want to consider visiting the island and US territory.

The history of Guam dates as far back as 2,000 BC, an era of ancient Chamorro life. The island has over 130 sites included on the National Register of Historic Places, with most of its culture and history coming from the Spanish era. The Japanese and Americans also occupied the island throughout its history.

These days, the island celebrates the native Chamorro culture. The original community of Chamorro natives on Guam has been inhabiting the area for almost 4,000 years.

Exciting Diving Opportunities

Guam boasts a rich coral reef marine environment, home to over 1,000 fish species and 400 types of coral. But beyond its well-maintained biodiversity, you can also learn the island’s history below the water’s surface.

Submerged remnants and shipwrecks of the First and Second World Wars can be found off the shore. Some sites even date back to the early trading days of the Spanish era.

The southern part of the island also features limestone forests and volcanoes, letting divers enjoy drop-offs and sloping reefs. Heading over to the north, you will find swim-throughs and limestone caves. The water also remains warm and clear all year round.

Guam is also hailed as one of the world’s top diving destinations, with the US Coast Guard and Navy patrolling the waters for added safety.

Guam is also the landmass nearest the Challenger Deep, the Earth’s deepest point, although no expeditions are available for tourists in the area.

Interesting Culture and Cuisine

Guam is often likened to Hawaii but with more Southeast Asian influence. The cuisine and culture on the island also showcase different influences it has had throughout history.

Specialties on the island include buenelos aga, or banana donuts; hotnon babui, or roasted pork; and kelaguen, a dish made with seafood or meat and lemon.

Guam’s culture is also rooted in celebration, with its people always having get-togethers, so something is going on almost all the time. For example, village fiestas are held every month. There are also bigger festivals, including the Guam Micronesia Island Fair, the Guam Live International Music Festival, and the Malesso Crab Festival. The island is also a melting pot with very hospitable locals who love to share and talk.
